In an exciting game last night the Albion capped a good season by beating Camden Lions 5-3 to finish fifth in the second division. From the off the Reds played good flowing football and created lots of chances, the Camden goalie was having a bad day and kept dropping the ball which helped. Our first goal came on the half hour, trouble was it was at the wrong end after a defensive panic ended with Matt slicing a clearance into our goal, which took some doing from a wide position outside the penalty area! We got one back by half time though, the ball being passed down the right wing for Sean to selflessly set up Will on the edge of the box.

Within two minutes of the restart the Reds had a couple more, Jim got the first with what I believe was the Albion’s first goal from an over-head kick, very nice, then Camden dithered after kicking off and James stole through to make it 3-1. Camden kept trying and took advantage of the ensuing Albion complacency to get two more goals before being awarded a penalty after an over-enthusiastic tackle from Will. A conversion would have given them the lead, to my relief the shot hit the post and was cleared by a grateful defence. Soon afterwards Camden’s keeper did Joss a favour by dropping the ball at his feet, then with ten minutes to go James hit a shot (he insisted afterwards that it was on target) which took a wicked deflection to make the score 5-3. Which was how it ended, an enjoyable game for the spectator indeed. Everyone played well, and our spirit was good.

The team (4-4-2 r-l): Rob; Irish Pete, Dom, Steve F, Matt (Tom 60); Sean (MH Pete 75), Rich, Will, Jim; James, Joss (Ben 80)

We had a good end of season drink at Rosie McCann’s afterwards with around twenty five people present, for the first time there were some trophies to give out. James has been at the top of the goal scoring table for most of the season so it was no surprise that he won the prize for that after his brace took him to 11, while with 23 appearances out of a possible 24 Rich was the most capped player. Thirty people voted for a players’ player of the season; James was fourth, Steve F and Will joint second, but the clear favourite was Rich who took home his second trophy of the season
So, thanks to everyone who’s played for their efforts this season, we’ve finished in the top half of the table for the first time and I’m well pleased. Our first friendly of the summer is on 3rd June so I’ll hopefully be seeing you then if not before.
