Another cup game, another team from a higher
division, this time Clocktower who are mid table in the First.
Regular visitors to Rosie McCann's will recognise the name as
they have pennants from various Eastern European tours on their
walls. Well, I'm pleased to say that they became the Albion's
latest heavyweight scalp in an exciting game which was settled
with penalties. |
|
The Reds started brightly and settled early,
we had a great first half with numerous chances, indeed for
parts of the first period we were camped in their half. The
Clocktower goalkeeper was forced into some brilliant saves,
while Giles only had to make a couple as the opposition only
looked dangerous on the break. Tom, Monkey Hanger Pete, Rich
and Jim all had notable efforts on goal, the midfield covered
the defence and brought the ball out well and the defence were
solid. Clocktower even had to clear off the line twice. Alas,
with only a couple of minutes to go, they managed to get through
after one of our defenders slipped. Their striker scored a fine
goal with which Giles had no real chance. Drat! |
| Having dominated the first,
the Albion came out for the second feeling that the game should
be theirs. We were very vocal and passed well, but after ten minutes
Clocktower got another, again on the break and this time we were
a little out of position due to our pressing forward for a goal.
The Reds kept plugging away and were rewarded with half an hour
to go, James rifled a low shot home from the edge of the area.
Things got worse for Clocktower as their keeper was sent off for
kicking Joss in the chest as they lay on the ground together,
our man only got a yellow for his mild retaliation. |
| Playing ten men we looked
even better, to be fair Clocktower had some of their better spells
of possession at this point but we scored again, this time on
the break. Captain Will collected the ball in our half, went past
at least three defenders then curled a beautiful right foot shot
in from out wide. Brilliant. The Albion had a few more chances
after that and I thought we were unlucky to have to go to penalties.
Jim, James,Tom and Joss all scored theirs, Giles saved Clocktower's
fifth with an intricate tap dancing move, then Rich scored his
and that was it. A right result, 7-6 on penalties. |
| We played really well in this
game, we deserved to win and, perhaps more importantly, this is
the first time we've scored in four games. The next couple of
matches are against teams below us in the league so here's hoping
that the floodgates have opened. Next up in the cup by the way
are Holborn City, a new team who went straight into the first
division. As far as man of the match goes, despite sterling performances
from James, Jim and Rich in particular, once again it has to go
to Will who captains the team well and scored a brilliant goal. |
| Our team (4-4-2
r-l): Giles; Ben (Irish Pete 55), Dom, Steve F, Will; MH Pete,
James, Rich, Jim; Tom, Joss. |
