Tonight's game was the second cup quarter final that Albion Reds have reached, unlike last time we had to beat a premier league team to get there as on the other occasion the first opponents were disqualified for using ringers and the next lot didn't show up. Progress or what?
From the off premier division Marys looked like they belonged in the premier league, they were rather good. The Albion did well to get the ball off them and pass it around a bit, we quickly changed to one up front and Tom had to cover a lot of ground to force them off the ball. Our first twenty five minutes were good but then they scored, and got a couple more soon after. Despite Joss looking really good in between the sticks the Albion were 5-0 down at half time, all of them good goals.
For the second half we went to 5-4-1 with Will as sweeper, again we held our own for the first twenty minutes but then started to flag. And again all of Marys' goals were well taken, our defence and midfield strove manfully but were a bit overwhelmed by the end. The Reds had a couple of chances late on, Joss even came up for a corner, and he got a touch on the ball I believe.
Tonight's man of the match is Tom, who had a lonely furrow to plough as lone striker for much of the game. But he didn't stop running, and got in a fair few good tackles and provided good movement in attack as well. Don't worry lads, we're back in the second division against Edexcel next week, no disrespect but a completely different kettle of fish. And it has to be said that tonight's scoreline in no way reflects the effort we put in.
The team (4-4-2 r-l): Joss; Sean, Dom (Lee 65), Steve F, Will; Irish Pete, Rich, Jim, MH Pete (Big Phil 67); Tom, James
