What with this being the Albion's first league game since re-discovering the art of scoring goals, and Westgate's being second from bottom of the table, I expected us to be in with a chance. The line up was largely the same as for our recent cup victory, the four changes being Sean at right wing, Mark B at centre half, goalkeeper Rob replacing Giles and Irish Pete showing up on time this week at right back.

The Reds had the best of the first fifteen minutes, in a pattern that was to be reflected throughout the game we held the ball well, passed with increasing confidence and made their goalie work. Then Westgate scored with their only attempt thus far when their striker latched onto a defensive header giving Rob no chance. The Albion answered quickly, within two minutes Will had broken down the left and played a great through ball for Tom to rifle home. We had more good attacking moves and plenty of possession, our next goal came on twenty two minutes courtesy of Joss while Sean headed number three just before half time from Will's cross. The midfield worked particularly well, James was looking up and playing people in from all angles, while Rich covered him solidly. And Will was influential as ever, one of the opposition was heard berating his team mates for failing to compete in the air - "he's only five foot four for f*ck's sake!". Five foot three and three quarters I'm reliably informed.

So, 3-1 at half time, an unusually calming situation for our team! From the start of the second half Westgate were a lot tighter and managed to stifle our creative play more effectively, they'd obviously decided to try and close Will down for one thing. Our defence had to work a bit harder (and were up to the challenge), Mark and Rob's communication skills really helped. After fifteen minutes we got another, Tom got on the end of another through ball, this time supplied by James. We had a few good chances thereafter, sub Dan, Rich and Sean all had good shots, Jim also had a goal disallowed even though it was over the line. So far over the line indeed that it hit the side of the net. The icing on the cake was our fifth goal with five minutes left, a simple tap in for Joss, 5-1 to the Albion.
We played well and with good spirit in this one, the win means that we're now four points clear of Camden Lions, still in sixth place with a game against the bottom four teams still to come. Handily placed as they say - we've twelve points at this stage (I think we finished with eleven last season) so a definite improvement. So well done those who played (and also thanks to Dom who was happy to stay on the bench in case anyone was injured), I'm sure you'll all agree that we can keep this up. It was particularly good to see both of our strikers score a brace, amongst a string of fine performances in all positions this week's man of the match is Rich, who covered a lot of ground and was very solid and influential in his role of defensive midfielder.
Our team (4-4-2 r-l): Rob; Irish Pete, Mark B, Steve F, Will; Sean, James (Dan 62), Rich, Jim; Tom (Steve J 70), Joss.
