Oh the trials and tribulations of amateur football management. Dom, the kit and I made it to the Trinity Road ground with a mere fifteen minutes to spare, by kick off time the Albion had only eight men on the pitch including my good self. Fortunately Westminster Wanderers were able to loan us a couple of (good) players so we started with James up front on his own. This formation worked to our advantage as he therefore wasn’t faced with his usual dilemna, namely do I pass to my striking buddy or do I beat some defenders for fun then score.
And score he did; the Wanderers keeper picked up the ball after dropping it, barrack-room referees Al, Mark and Pete pointed out the illegality of his action, then Ed teeed up James from the resulting (indirect) free kick. The Albion had the better of the first half (and indeed the second), we brought the ball out well and managed to hang on to it too. We had a few more chances before half time, far and away the best of which was my attempt to lob the keeper with the outside of my foot from James’ cross; with the sun in his eyes he was lucky to tip it over for a corner. Sean appeared just before half time and came on to join James up front, Ben arrived simultaneously but I guess was slower to get his kit on.
The Reds had the sun in their eyes for the second half but that didn’t trouble us, a couple more goals settled us nicely. They were almost identical, each time Rob crossed sweetly for Mark to score with (surprise surprise) his head; as captain Pete pointed out both were started and finished at 64 Battledean Road.
Ed made it 4-0 with five minutes to go, I should also mention that Mikey was well in control of his area throughout the game, and indeed kept his first clean sheet for the Albion. So everyone’s a winner, including the good denizens of Wandsworth Common who have a rather nice pub to take advantage of, the Hope. Real German beer on tap, well scrubbed up birds and nine of the Albion’s finest in attendance, can’t go wrong.
No man of the match today as I thought everyone played their part well, but just for fun I’ll give it to the centre midfielder we borrowed for the first half, can’t remember his name but he’d played ninety minutes already and was still willing to run around for us.
